Steam paved the way for the development of electric power. Electricity is generated by using steam pressure raised by coal, oil, natural gas or nuclear fuel to drive a turbine which, in turn, drives a generator. So the technologe of even today's most modern power stations looks back to the principles worked out over two hundred years ago.
