The
HE-178 performed its first test flight on 27 August 1939, a few days
before the outbreak of Word War II. The plane was a simple "flying
stovepipe", with straight-through airflow from nose to tail. The
aircraft had high-mounted tapered wings and a conventional tail
assembly.
