HORSELESS CARRIAGE

The first N. American  automobile was placed on the market in 1887. Success was almost immediate,
and by 1910 nearly a half-million automobiles were on the road. Steam, gas and electric power all had
their proponents, and automobiles of all sizes and styles were offered. Manufacturers appeared by the
hundreds --- and most of them as quickly disappeared. It was a dynamic era for the developing Ameri-
can automotive industry, an era whose effects have changed the face of the country and the lives of all
who live in it.
