ATKINSON
MODEL ENGINE
The James Atkinson's 1886 "Cycle" engine is built around
a
1 1/4"
diameter piston which completes all four strokes in a single turn of
the crankshaft. and each stroke is a different lenght. Home-Made....The
engine was built from scratch using
a lathe, drill press, and hand tools.

A
rare and unusual engine from the 1880's. Atkinson was competing in a
expanding small market against Nicolaus Otto's newly developed
fourstroke engine. Otto held numerous patents that vertuly eliminated
all competition. To avoid infringement Atkinson was forced to create a
completely new aproach to internal combustion.
