The Newcomen Pump
The "atmospheric engine" that Newcoman set up in 1712 was far more complex than Savery's machine. With its great domed boiler, brick engine house and gaunt, see-sawing beam connected with the heavy pump rods, it was much bigger.
The domed boiler filled the cylinder above it with steam. A piston moved up under pressure, and a rod raised the beam. This lowered its other end. A vacuum was then introduced to the cylinder, causing the piston to fall, and the whole cycle began again.
