Neither the steam engine nor the horse were
threatened by a pre-1876 internal-combustion engine, but the status quo
was soon to change. In the spring of that year Nicolaus Otto's newest
brainchild breathed its first live. A practicle I-C engine had finally
combined mixture compression and combustion expansion in the same
cylinder. The performance of this direct ancestor to all modern
reciprocating engines, from the outset, was far superior to all
its competitors.
