Wright Bros., (Orville & Wilber)
After a failed attempt on 14 Dec. 1903 by Wilber, the Wrights flew the worlds first powered airplane at Kitty Hawk on 17 Dec. 1903. Orville flew it about 120-feet in about 12 seconds.
It was the world's first power-driven, heavier-than-air machine in which man made free, controlled and sustained flight invented and built by Wilber and Orville Wright by original scientific research the Wright Brothers discovered the principles of human flight as inventors, builders, and flyers they further developed the aeroplane, taught man to fly, and opened the era of aviation.
Today, the 1903 Flyer hangs in the Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution.

Built by the Wright Bros. mechanic Charlie Taylor using nothing more than hand tools,
a lathe and drill press, the 4 cylinder engine with 4-inch stroke and bore produced 8 hp
at 670 rpm, 11 hp at 1,000 rpm and 12 hp at full throttle.
